Adı Antoine D’agata.

2004 den beri bir Magnum fotoğrafçısı. Belgesel fotoğraflar çekiyor.

Bugün bir fotoğraf dergisinde röportajını okuyunca, onun hakkında yazmam gerektiğini düşündüm. Hayır fotoğraflarını beğendiğim için değil. Sıra dışı olduğunu düşündüğüm için.

Röportaj büyük puntalarla yazılmış şu cümle ile başlıyor.

‘’ Uyarı: seks ve uyuşturucu göndermeleri içermektedir.’’

Şu anda üzerinde çalıştığı konu fahişelik ve uyuşturucu bağımlılığı. Geçmişte bir fahişe ile yaşadığı ilişkide methamphetamin bağımlısı olduğunu ve bir süre sonra bu ilişkiyi sonlandırmak için gerekli gücü bulmak zorunda kaldığını söylüyor.

2005 yılından beri yerleşik bir düzeni olmamış. Şimdilerde Phnom Penh, Kamboçya’da çalışıyor. Röportajın ana konusu Kamboçya’da çektiği fotoğraflar ve fotoğrafladığı fahişelerle olan ilişkileri. 

Röportajdan orijinal alıntılar yapmak istiyorum. Çünkü çok daha çarpıcı olacağına inanıyorum.

- So why are you drawn to photograph prostitutes and their milieu?

I’ve spent my life in the world of prostitution. It’s a world in which men expose their ugliness and women prove their courage; a detestable world where the instincts for survival and cruelty dictate each and every action…... The girls, the clients and all the wretches who cross paths and destroy themselves, are prisoners of a monstrous false reality. I tasted that life when I was very young. I make no excuse for it – it was due to my own refusal to work, and my contempt for the law…… The intensity of the lives people lead in this world, ruled by the brute forces of instinct, rage, desire and madness, is as addictive as the drugs in their blood. My capacity to exist on the edge of this gulf, which I acquired from years of agony, is precious – it’s something I refuse to give up.

- You sometimes describe your images as ‘’innocent’’. How can they be so?

I speak of those photos that break the connection between art and life. It’s not enough to pretend to take part in the experience of the world, and then hide in the shallow imitation that is your representation of it. I try to produce photos that remove all distance – that are no more than the unedited, uncensored depiction of perfect moments when life, work and thoughts destroy themselves. Innocence is possibly the nature of those images…… I want to redirect art to life, breaking the limits that separate theory from action, entertainment from the real thing. Images are innocent if they aren’t content just to give form to an idea, but participate in the deliberate creation of situation that bear witness to the will of life, and are born from the very act that engenders them.

-Some critics have suggested that your work is exploitative. What do you say to that?

I don’t believe that anyone has right to criticise my work on moral grounds – a morality that’s often born of consensual anonymity or intellectual slavery.

Beni etkileyen fotoğraflarından çok dürüstlüğü oldu. Sanatla gerçek hayat arasında kurmaya çalıştığı ve bunu da fotoğrafları ile ortaya koyduğu bağ bana çok gerçekçi geldi.  Çektiği fotoğrafların arkasında yatan felsefe alabildiğince yalın ve bir o kadar da korkutucu. Ama bununla yüzleşme şekli cesur, tıpkı bahsettiği çalışan kadınlar gibi.
